Valentina Arduini was born in Palermo, Sicily in 1994, and grew up as the Sicilian Mafia's princess. Her father, Giovanni Arduini, was the Mafia's underboss and best friend to Mafia boss, Dario Denaro. Due to retaliation from rival Calderone mafia family, Valentina's mother was killed when she was young, leaving Giovanni to raise her. At the age of eighteen, Valentina became the Mafia's first woman to have a seat at clan meetings and their main hitman.

Life in the Mafia was not as glamorous as it seemed. Throughout her childhood, Valentina had only one friend, Dante, Dario's son and also the Mafia prince. Dante was five years older, and the two of them were known as the Sicilian Mafia's future. Their relationship was complicated, mostly due to the fact Dante couldn't keep it in his pants. In his eyes, they were a power couple, but for Valentina, they were anything but. One thing her father taught her was that loyalty and family were the utmost important things in life.

When she was nineteen, Valentina met a boy, Niccolò di Santino, and the two fell in love. Just a few years older than her, Niccolò was on vacation in Palermo with his family when he bumped into Valentina, literally. He ran into her as she was leaving a coffee shop, spilling coffee on her white custom-tailored pantsuit. She would have shot him right then and there outside the coffee shop but something stopped her. He didn't look at her with intimidation or fear in his eyes like the locals did. In fact, Niccolò had no idea who she was or that she was in the Mafia. It was refreshing, to say the least. After his dozen of apologies and persuasiveness, Valetina agreed to meet him for a drink later that night. And the two of them spent the night on the beach, talking until the sun came up.

Following that night, Valetina and Niccolò exchanged text messages and phone calls for over a year, and met each other in secret whenever she could get away for a weekend. She would always go to him, or meet him somewhere outside of Sicily. Valentina felt guilty for being dishonest and came clean, telling Niccolò about her family's background and her ties to the Sicilian Mafia. He didn't care. He knew her as the girl he bumped into and fell in love with. That's all that mattered to him. For his safety and the safety of his family, Valentina kept the relationship a secret from her father, the Mafia, and Dante.

On their two year anniversary, Niccolò presented her with his grandmother's engagement ring, asking her to leave the Mafia and run away with him. Without a second thought, she said yes. Valentina wanted nothing more than to live a long and happy life with Niccolò. Except one giant problem was in the way of that: the Mafia.

No one ever left the Mafia, the only way out was death. Upon the realization she needed to tell Niccolò she couldn’t marry him, Valentina broke down in tears, just as Giovanni walked by her bedroom. Hearing her cries made his heart ache, and he comforted his daughter until she calmed. He recognized the pain she went through, it was the same he felt when her mother died. After much convincing, Valentina told Giovanni everything about Niccolò. Wanting only the best and happiness for her, Giovanni would do whatever he could to make it happen.

Getting Dario to agree to Valentina's request was easier than Giovanni expected, except he couldn't have been more wrong. Dario lied to him and in truth, he took Valentina's request as an act of betrayal. The Cosa Nostra’s future was setup in such a way that Dante would become the next boss once Dario retires or dies, whichever came first. And at his son's side would be Valentina, his best friend's daughter.

To show all members the enforcement of this strict rule, Dario had Valentina kidnapped and brought to their headquarters to be placed in front of the heads of all Sicilian clans including her father. Dario gave Valentina a choice: pledge allegiance to the Mafia or exile. Regardless of her choice, she knew Dario would make an example out of her and death would be the result. With apologetic eyes, she met her father's tear-filled gaze and he nodded. No words were exchanged, but Dario knew what his daughter wanted to say and she knew he would say it right back. Without hesitation, Valentina chose exile, and closed her eyes, silently praying as she waited for the dark to take her. But it never came. Instead, she heard her name spoken by a voice she never thought she would hear from again, Niccolò's. Horror washed over her, seeing her lover on his knees and Dario holding a gun to his head. His death was the price for her betrayal.

Although Dario may have not granted Valentina exile officially, it felt that way. She was no longer Cosa Nostra’s main hitman, and lost her seat at clan meetings. She was regarded as any other female in the Mafia; just a member with no voice. Even Dante kept his distance from her, on orders from his father, but their union would remain for the Mafia's future.

Valentina never went a day without thinking of Niccolò. In fact, she vowed to avenge his death and planned to get her revenge on Dario. It took a couple years but eventually, Valentina gained Dario's trust again. She regained her status as the main hitman following the 'accidental' death of the man who replaced her, Rino. Little did anyone know, it was her tampering that caused Rino's car to explode. Next on her personal hitlist was Dario.

Before Valentina could get her revenge, the unexpected happened. The Calderones, the same rival mafia family that killed her mother, staged an ambush outside one of the restaurants the Mafia owned. Lucky for Valentina, she was still inside the restaurant when the attack broke out, but the others weren't so fortunate. Dario died, and many were injured. Dante suffered a gunshot wound to his left shoulder, and Giovanni received numerous gunshot wounds. The blood loss was too much for Giovanni to recover from his injuries, and the most the hospital staff could do was make him comfortable during his final hours.

With Dario gone and Giovanni in the hospital, that placed Dante as the next in line. News about the ambush immediately broke across the country and the clans erupted in a frenzy, making plans to execute revenge for their boss.

As much as Valentina wanted to go on a killing spree and wipe out the Calderone family, she stayed by her father's side, holding his hand until his end came. Giovanni used his last breath to tell his daughter his dying wish; for her to return home and look in the wall behind the framed picture of her mother in his office.

An hour later, Valentina was reading through a thick file folder, filled with escape instructions that Giovanni had set in place for her, and a letter to her that he wrote the night Niccolò was murdered. Her father felt responsible for Niccolò's death, despite not being the one who pulled the trigger. He hated Dario for taking away her happiness, and hoped this escape plan would provide her with the chance to find happiness again. Far away from Dante.

The night following Dario and Giovanni's funeral, Valentina set the plan in motion. Packing a quick go-bag of necessities, she took her father's speedboat and headed across the Tyrrhenian Sea towards Cagliari in Sardinia. There, she met with Giovanni's old contacts and within hours, Valentina was on a private jet to the United States of America, with brand-new passports from multiple countries, and details of bank accounts Giovanni setup in her name. She had everything she needed to start a new life.

For a few years, twenty-five year old Valentina was living her life on the run, staying no more than four-to-six months in one place. She wore different coloured wigs and coloured contact lenses, and even went as far as getting temporary tattoos. A person could only run for so long until they burnt out.
